The story begins…
Once upon a time, there lived two friends Dharmabuddhi and Paapbuddhi in a town. Dharmabuddhi was an honest and gentle man, while Paapbuddhi was notorious for cunningness and fraud. Despite this, both were close friends since childhood.
One day, Papbuddhi suggested an idea to Dharmabuddhi to earn money, which Dharmabuddhi readily agreed to. He opened a shop and built his business with great hard work. The business started flourishing due to Dharmabuddhi’s hard work and dedication. But Papbuddhi’s mind was full of deceit and he planned to earn all the profit alone.
The shop started doing very well and the income of both of them started increasing gradually. Dharambuddhi spent a large part of his earnings in helping the poor and the needy. Respect and honour kissed his feet, but Papbuddhi did not like all this.
One night Papbuddhi said to Dharmabuddhi, “Friend! We have earned a lot of wealth, why don’t we hide it in a safe place now?” Dharmabuddhi agreed and together they hid the wealth by digging under a tree.
After some time, Papbuddhi made a plan to steal the money and one night he took out the money secretly. In the morning, he went to Dharmabuddhi and without revealing the whole secret, he made an excuse of illness and told him that a cheat came to him and stole the money. Dharmabuddhi was a simple and honest person, he believed Papbuddhi and consoled him.
But when they both reached the place where the money was kept, Dharmabuddhi saw that the money was missing. Papbuddhi accused Dharmabuddhi of stealing the money and took him to the elders of the city to accuse him.
Dharmabuddhi pleaded for justice and the judge heard the story of both. The judge was very wise, he told Dharmabuddhi that he would ask the tree about the money. When the tree was questioned, it said that it had seen Paapbuddhi stealing the money at night. Paapbuddhi was caught and Dharmabuddhi got justice.
The judge punished Paapbuddhi and Dharmabuddhi got all the money back. This incident taught a new lesson to the people of the city that evil has an evil end and truth prevails.
Moral: Honesty and truth are always victorious, while deceit and evil always have a tragic end.
